Our vision describes Auburn University’s aspiration 20 years from now. It’s purposefully designed to be high – down to earth and still challenging while being daring and ambitious. It is a challenge for ourselves to achieve greatness. Our Vision is an invitation to the Auburn family and those new to Auburn University to join us in our quest to inspire, innovate and transform.

Auburn University has established itself as an excellent public land grant university. However, excellence is not enough. We aspire to become a world-renowned institution that excels in education, research and service, and to become a model of higher education. We understand that higher education is on the brink of change. We intend to lead and shape this change.

Our goals outline Auburn University’s highest priorities for the next five years. Achieving these objectives will place our institution in the best position to achieve its 20-year vision.

As a land granting institution, Auburn University is dedicated to improving the lives of Alabama people, the nation, and the world through cutting-edge education, research and scholarships that improve life and selfless service.

Auburn University’s mission concisely describes our central purpose. Our mission statement begins with a reference to the origins and obligations of the university as a public university granting land. The Morrill Act of 1862 created institutions of higher education focused on agriculture and the mechanical arts, a response to changing social and economic conditions. The granting universities would provide practical solutions to pressing societal problems and provide higher education to a much larger segment of the American population. Land granting universities would ultimately serve as creators of economic and development opportunities. As such, we must never lose sight of the important educational, research and service responsibilities inherent in our lineage of land grants. Following its founding as a land granting university, Auburn was also designated, through federal law, as a maritime and space granting university.

Our first responsibility is to educate our students and prepare them for life. We strive to broaden their minds, broaden their experiences and hone their abilities by imparting both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Our goal is to empower and inspire our students to give their best and achieve their hopes and dreams. A key part of our Public Charter and the Auburn Creed is to ensure that our students are instilled with a strong work ethic, strong character traits, and core values ​​of honesty and respect. We encourage students to make valuable contributions and guide their fellow citizens in creating meaningful change. This responsibility of building moral character and instilling active social responsibility distinguishes the student experience at all funded universities, and certainly at Auburn University.

Our second responsibility is to stimulate the development of research and scholarship which creates and advances knowledge. We support, build and leverage the expertise of our professors, students and partners to discover, innovate and create new sciences, new technologies and new applications and methodologies that concretely improve our world.

Our third responsibility, engagement and awareness, exploits the value of the first two elements. Our duty is to enable our students, graduates, professors and partners to transform the fruits of our research and our scholarships into products, methods and services that meet the most urgent needs of our communities. Providing practical and tangible solutions is what sets land grant universities apart and is at the heart of the founding of Auburn University.

To be among the best land granting universities, we must continue to excel in all three responsibilities. It requires leveraging the synergy found in the exchange of education, research, and service to maximize our impact on Alabama and the world.
