Union Gospel Mission plans hygiene gifts for the holidays

Many families remember to donate food while on vacation when other needs are not met.

Hygiene items, including toothbrushes, shampoo and other toiletries, are not covered by food benefit programs.

This makes decisions difficult for families forced to choose between paying bills and purchasing essential hygiene items, said Chariss Warner, director of ministries of health. Mission of evangelization of the Union of the three cities.

She said heads of mission were looking for a way to fill a need that was lacking in other services.

“It was one of the things we instantly know that everyone needs,” she said. “If you’re a single mom, the $ 5 you spend on shampoo might help you elsewhere. “

Their first giveaway event in late September drew more than 50 people without any publicity, Warner said.

“They responded with just pain,” she said. “One of our children we helped a while ago was explaining how he and his family share a toothbrush.”

Mission is planning its second hygiene giveaway event 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, at the mission at 221 S. Fourth Avenue in Pasco. The event was sponsored by Framatome.

They distribute soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant stick, toothpaste, toothbrush, razors, shaving cream, formula or diapers and wipes.

They also have denture care, adult diapers, toilet paper, towels and tampons.

This month they are also giving away a Thanksgiving food box.

Another giveaway slated for December is sponsored by the Kadlec Regional Medical Center, Warner said.

“We are looking for sponsors until 2021,” she said. “We believe this is a long term need. ”

Anyone interested in making a donation can join the mission by dialing 509-547-2112.
