United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a new mission statement after asking its employees to “submit words that they believe best exemplify the work of the agency.” The new mission statement reflects those comments, along with the Biden administration’s priorities and Director Ur Jaddou’s “vision of an inclusive and accessible agency,” USCIS said in a Feb. 9, 2022, press release. The agency has 19,000 employees and contractors working in more than 200 offices around the world.

The new mission statement says, “USCIS delivers on America’s promise as a nation of welcome and opportunity with fairness, integrity, and respect for all those we serve.” The USCIS Mission Statement webpage also lists and describes the agency’s “core values,” including integrity, respect, innovation, and vigilance.

The new mission statement, which emphasizes hospitality and respect, reflects USCIS’ restoration of the agency’s focus on service. The revision moves away from the previous administration’s changes that emphasized security and dropped the phrase “America’s promise as a nation of immigrants.”

In a statement announcing the new mission statement, Director Jaddou said, “At its core, USCIS is about making decisions to families, businesses, workers, and those who seek refuge in our country on their applications, petitions, requests and appeals. new mission statement? reflects the character? inclusive? of our country and of this agency.

The American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) “applauded” the new mission statement. Benjamin Johnson, executive director of AILA, said the new declaration “hopefully signals a return to a welcoming and service-oriented USCIS that faithfully administers its statutory purpose with integrity.”
