LONDON, ON – The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at a local shelter, Men’s Mission Services of London, at 459 York Street.
The health unit says nine people, including five staff and four clients, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday.
“Although the Health Unit has not observed any massive transmission in progress within the establishment, given the number of cases associated with the mission over the past week, the declaration of an epidemic is a step important to limit further transmission of the virus within the community, ”says Dr Alex Summers, Assistant Medical Officer of Health at Middlesex-London Health Unit.
The Health Unit was informed of a first case on December 17.
The original case was a resident of the facility.
An outbreak was declared after five more cases were identified over the past week at Men’s Mission.
MLHU advises those who work, live in, or access Men’s Mission services to monitor themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 and get tested if necessary.
“Our team is working closely with Mission Services to implement outbreak measures to reduce the potential for further spread.”
